What to Do When Your Boiler Breaks Down in South Wales

What to Do When Your Boiler Breaks Down in South Wales

It always seems to happen on the coldest Welsh morning. You get out of bed, turn on the heating and the radiators stay stone cold. If you’re dealing with a boiler breakdown in South Wales, it’s easy to panic — but a few calm checks can often get you back up and running or at least help you decide when you need an emergency plumber in South Wales.

First — Check the Obvious Things

Before you assume the worst, run through these simple checks. They’re safe to do and might save you a callout:

  • Is the power on? Check that the boiler is switched on at the mains and that your fuse box hasn’t tripped.
  • Has the pressure dropped? Most boilers like to sit around 1–1.5 bar when cold. If it’s close to zero, you’ll often lose heating and hot water.
  • Is there an error code on the display? Make a note of any fault code that’s showing. This is very useful information for an engineer.
  • Have you checked your gas supply? Make sure other gas appliances, like your hob, still work and that your gas meter has credit if you use prepay.

How to Repressurise Your Boiler

If your boiler pressure is low, it may just need repressurising. Always check your boiler manual first, but the process is usually similar to this:

  • 1. Turn the boiler off. Let it cool for a few minutes.
  • 2. Find the filling loop. This is usually a silver, flexible hose underneath the boiler with one or two small taps.
  • 3. Open the valves slowly. Turn them until you can hear water flowing into the system. Watch the pressure gauge as it rises.
  • 4. Stop at around 1–1.5 bar. As soon as the needle reaches the recommended pressure (check your manual), close the valves firmly.
  • 5. Turn the boiler back on. Reset the boiler if needed and see if your heating and hot water return.

If the pressure keeps dropping back down after a short time, there may be a leak or another fault and you’ll need a qualified plumber or heating engineer to investigate.

When to Call an Emergency Plumber

Some issues are best left to a professional, especially if they’re getting worse or happening repeatedly. Call an emergency plumber if you notice:

  • Loud banging, clunking or kettling noises from the boiler or pipes.
  • Water leaking from your boiler, pipework or any part of the heating system.
  • Boiler pressure that won’t hold, even after you repressurise it.
  • Pilot light or flame that keeps going out, or the boiler constantly locking out.
  • No heat or hot water after you’ve checked the basics like power, controls, and pressure.

If you ever smell gas or feel unwell, leave the property immediately and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 before you call a plumber.

Keeping Warm While You Wait

Waiting for an engineer on a cold day isn’t fun, but a few simple steps can help keep you and your home comfortable:

  • Use electric heaters safely. Keep them away from curtains and furniture, don’t leave them unattended, and avoid overloading sockets.
  • Layer up and use hot water bottles or electric blankets. Several thin layers trap heat better than one thick jumper.
  • Close doors and curtains. Keep the heat in the rooms you’re using, especially living rooms and bedrooms.
  • Check on neighbours. If you have elderly or vulnerable neighbours, see if they’re warm and have what they need.
  • Protect your pipes. If it’s freezing outside, open cupboard doors where pipes run and use towels or blankets to add a bit of insulation around exposed pipework.
